一学前教育开设英语教育活动的理论依据

(一)儿童发展的需要

维果斯基(Vygotsky)的最近发展区(---ZPD)中指出,儿童的学习与发展之间存在一种差距,这种差距在监护人或者是家长的协同帮助下构建一种支架式(scaffolding)的学习模式为幼儿提供足够的材料和信息来刺激最近发展区,从而完成工作任务[2]。此外,在他的思维与语言(thoughtandlanguage)中也明确宣称能够用两种语言表达同一思想可使儿童“将语言看作是他的头脑中已经拥有的诸多系统中的一个特殊系统,看作众多语言中的一种,从而提高了他们的语言操作能力”。双语儿童在创编故事及语言输出方面表现出比单语儿童更大的创造性和开放性。奥地利生态学家康罗德•洛伦兹(1937)提出“关键期”假说,2---3岁是儿童口头语言发展的关键期,儿童学习书面语言的关键期是4---5岁,在此期间,如果儿童没有接受语言环境的刺激,以后就很难学会此类行动。皮亚杰(JeanPiaget)的观点也认为3-6岁儿童的思维发展最活跃的时期,儿童在此阶段的认知、批判思维、语言表达能力以及观察能力、模仿能力都呈现质的飞跃[3]。日本有位名叫秋田教授说,人类学习第二语言也存在关键期,他明确提出“人如果在他出生后三天才学习英语,那么他就已经晚了两天了”,他认为儿童学习英语越早越好。[4]美国康乃尔大学的研究机构在《自然》[4]1996年第1期杂志宣称:幼儿在学习外语时,大脑将外语贮存在“布罗卡斯区”,然而这个区域与母语相同的部位,而成年人在学习外语时大脑已无法将外语贮存在布罗卡斯区,只能在大脑的另一区域重新建立起记忆结构。新建立的记忆结构没有“布罗卡斯区”灵敏,在进行语言输出时还需要与“布罗卡斯区”建立联系。这一重要研究结果充分证明了儿童早期学习外语所具备的生理优势。除此之外,幼儿学习英语也有其心理优势,因为幼儿学习英语不害羞、不怕笑、敢于接受自己出现的语言错误,也具备学习外语的好奇心。只要老师给他们提供有趣的语言实践语境,幼儿就会很容易的自然习得二语。

(二)时代的需要

贵州是一个气候宜人的旅游城市,近几年发展迅速,定期举行国际风筝节旅游文化节等,吸引了国内外成千上万的游客,对外开放,文化交流相当的平凡。幼儿学习英语是社会发展的需要。《中华母婴网》2002年2月21日文章提到“幼儿学英语的重要性概括起来讲就是为了适应未来社会经济高速发展的需要。证实了英语是一种国际通用语言。在郭力平&李琳的《上海市幼儿园园长的调查分析》中得出,三分之一的园长认为为了满足社会发展的需要,幼儿园开设英语教育势在必行。

(三)家长的需要

随着人们生活水平的提高,出国留学、旅行已不是一件难事,随着网络技术的突飞猛进,诸多应用软件都是英语著称,也包括各种各样的化妆品,日用产品,跟随着微信代购产品时不时闯进我们的日常生活,在人们的眼里,在这个地球村年代,家长似乎意识到如果不懂英语会给生活上带来诸多的不便,已经意识到学习英语的重要性,自己真真切切的体会到不懂英语带来的严重后果。所以,家长们目睹时代的变迁坚信学好英语一定要从娃娃抓起。正好幼儿园没有大胆的开设英语教育,使得市场上的培训机构大展生手,从而迎合了家长们的需求。

(四)幼儿园的需要

幼儿园开设早期英语教育其实是一种新的理念和一种新的挑战,对于教师的发展以及园长的发展其实都是一种前所未有的考验,开设英语教育无外乎是对幼儿教师提出了更高的要求,不仅要精通幼儿教育基本常识和理论,更要精通幼儿英语教育方法和构念,更要了解英语国家文化素养,更重要的是要对外国文化与中国文化进行交汇,汲取精华去其糟粕。

(五)幼小衔接的需要

至2001年教育部出台小学三年级学生必须开设英语课以来,学习英语低龄化是人们有目共睹的,家长们质问为什么从三年级开始,不从一年级,二年级,乃至幼儿园开始,尽管对于开设英语教育是越早越好,还是越晚越好,至今还是一个引起学术界争议的问题,使得有条件的家庭毫无疑问把自己的小孩送去英语培训机构的原因,然而贫困家庭儿童不能有效地接受幼儿英语的熏陶,从而造成幼儿英语起点差异化,幼小衔接脱节化现象。

二学前教育开设英语教育活动值得思考的几个问题

(一)师资问题

根据郭力平、李琳的调查与研究中发现,园长们也并非盲目乐观地接受幼儿英语教育,因为,目前的确存在一些情况:一是,英语专业的学生不愿意去幼儿园工作,非英语专业的幼儿教师不懂幼儿英语教学法,英语知识薄弱,语音语调不标准,难以与幼儿进行纯英语的沟通交流。[5]二是,幼儿园英语教师得不到专业的英语岗前培训和后续培训,就拿铜仁幼专为例,给新上岗的老师培训没有一次是涉及幼儿英语教育。三是,教师难以接受幼儿英语专业教学法的指导,师师之间,老师与领导之间也缺乏必要的交流,很多老师是依从自己以前老师在中学阶、大学阶段的教学方法来教幼儿,这种所谓的语法翻译法、任务型教学法等违背了儿童的身心发展规律,导致幼儿英语教育适得其反。

一、 创设学前儿童英语学习的家庭物质环境

1.创设生活英语化的家庭英语环境。创设一个可视、可感、有形的英语学习环境,营造良好的英语学习氛围,把幼儿的英语学习内容渗透在有准备的环境中,使幼儿在潜移默化中感受着第二语言的存在。

2.创设多元化的家庭英语环境。家长应有意识的陪幼儿观看动画片、中英文结合的儿童故事片,在观看的过程中,尽管儿童的注意力集中在有趣的人物、绚丽的色彩和滑稽的情节上,但他们在反复观看的过程中,就能熟悉英语的语音,并能自动地将语音与情节逐步地对应起来,这就为其进一步地学习奠定了基础。

二、创设学前儿童英语学习的家庭语言环境

幼儿习得母语的方法就是自然渗透式的。这种学习方法是最自然也是效果最好的。但是这种教育方式需要家长有一定的英语基础,并且家长要有教育意识,任何时候都要试图用英语和儿童交流在生活中不断给幼儿英语刺激。家长要有意识地将事先学会的单词或日常用语穿插在一日生活中,和幼儿进行有效的英语互动交流,经过一段时间的熏陶,孩子自然能够记住和运用。经过大量的英语语音刺激,量变就会转为质变。家庭生活的每一时机都可渗透英语,有条件的家长可以择机而教,随时运用英语与儿童交谈,进行日常英语对话,不断提高儿童的口语水平。

家长也可以和幼儿一起阅读英文绘本(picture book),英文绘本能让孩子在最自然的环境下学习英语。和幼儿一起进行亲子阅读,幼儿可以在色彩丰富的图画帮助下听懂、看懂英文故事,家长还可以指导孩子看图说英语。

三、创设学前儿童英语学习的家庭心理环境

儿童学习第一语言关系着他们的生存和生活,属于一种天然的动机。这种天然的动机是由人类的社会关系与社会实际的需要所产生的,是一种心理和情感的需要,这种天然的动机就是亲和动机。所谓亲和动机是指学习者处在某一个特定的语言环境中,为了能够适应这个语言环境,尽快成为该语言群体的一员而主动学习和掌握语言,最终达到提高自我在群体中的地位,实现自我。由此可见,亲和动机具有方向的意义,它关系到语言学习的成功。由于幼儿的独立性较差,在家他们要依恋父母,在幼儿园他们主要依恋老师和他们所在集体,他们从父母、老师、同伴那里获得安全感。当儿童处在一个第二语言的环境中,为了不失去原有的安全感,他们会主动地“玩这种新的语言游戏”,并努力去掌握其中的“游戏规则”,他们并不一定把第二语言学习看作是一种学习任务,而是将它当作参与游戏活动以及获得爱、安全感、满足需要和得到奖赏的一种方式。

随着社会经济的发展,农业生产力的不断提高,农村富余劳动力逐渐走向城市。但是,由于城乡二元结构壁垒的存在,社会保障、教育、住房等诸多因素阻碍了农民工子女随父母入住城市,“留守儿童”――指父母双方或一方流动到其他地区,孩子留在户籍所在地并因此不能和父母双方共同生活在一起的儿童[1]――这个特殊群体作为农民工的一个副产品出现了。因为“留守”,他们在生活、学习等方面无法得到父母及家庭的关心,其生活、学习环境,以及由于“留守”而产生的心理问题对他们的英语学习产生了消极而深远的影响。

一、“留守儿童”的英语学习现状

有资料显示,目前,我国有超过近亿的农民在外务工,打工者的数量还在以每年超过500万的速度增长,[2]他们的子女处在义务教育年龄阶段的约为3000万,成为“留守儿童”。“留守儿童”英语教育问题已成为国内许多专家、学者关注的问题,也是学校、老师和家长共同担忧的事情。为了解他们的英语学习状况,笔者对湖南永州某中学高一年级的3个班的190名学生进行了一次问卷调查。调查问卷共设11个问题,全部为客观题。共发问卷190份,收回175份,其中有效问卷为175份。在问题设计上,以“留守儿童”的生活、学习环境和心理状况及这些因素对他们英语学习的影响为主。

调查中,笔者发现,175名学生中,“留守儿童”占,大多数(约70%)“留守儿童”不喜欢英语。在问及“对自己的英语水平是否满意”时,有85%的“留守儿童”表示对自己的英语水平不是很满意,而三个班中英语成绩好的学生均为非“留守儿童”;当问及“如果父母在身边他们的英语成绩可否提高”时,的“留守儿童”认为如果父母在身边他们对自己英语学习成绩的提高有信心。

中学阶段,学生各方面的知识结构都已形成了较为完整的系统,对新知识的理解和接受能力也有了较大的提高。可由于“留守”,“留守儿童”在英语学习上都缺失端正的学习态度和良好的学习习惯,各方面环境也存在制约,成绩自然也就相对落后,这也影响了他们在英语学习上的信心。

二、影响“留守儿童”英语学习的因素分析

在二语习得过程中,环境是外语学习的外部条件和客观因素,但又是外语学习必不可少的、构成外语学习完整体系的组成部分,对外语学习产生重要影响。[3]良好的环境在英语习得(“留守儿童”的第二语言习得)过程中起着积极的作用,反之会阻碍英语学习。当然,除了外在环境,学习者自身的心理因素也起到重要的作用。

1.监护者的影响

“留守儿童”有四种监护方式:隔辈监护――监护人是爷爷、奶奶或姥姥、姥爷;上辈监护――监护人为叔叔、婶婶、舅舅、舅妈、姑姑、姑父等;同辈监护――监护者是哥哥、嫂嫂或姐姐、姐夫;监护缺失(或“留守儿童”自我监护)。而这四种监护都在一定程度上造成了“留守儿童”家庭教育的缺失。农村老年人大多文化程度低,对英语一无所知,又缺乏先进的教育理念和科学的教育方法,加之年纪大,无论在精力还是智力上都无法对孙辈进行有效的英语辅导。“寄人篱下”,出于传统亲情关系,亲戚不便对“留守儿童”严加管束,英语家庭教育更无法实施。而监护缺失情况下的“留守儿童”因为没人管束,自律性不强,容易受外界不良行为或习惯的影响,自主学习可能性不大,英语成绩也就日趋下降,最终丧失英语学习的信心和兴趣,形成一种恶性循环。

2.逆向监护的影响

在对“留守儿童”的访谈中发现,他们有的还承担着照顾爷爷、奶奶或者姥姥、姥爷或其他家庭成员的任务。由于这些监护人年龄偏大,身体虚弱,“留守儿童”得花很多时间和精力去照顾监护人,(这实际上变成了逆向监护)抽不出充足的时间来完成英语学习任务,他们花在听、说、读、写等方面的时间有限,对所学知识不能及时消化和巩固,给他们的英语学习带来了极大的负面影响。在笔者的访谈个案中,一位父亲在外打工,母亲患有精神病的女孩告诉我们:

“刚开始学英语的时候我的成绩挺好的,对英语也感兴趣。爸爸出去打工后,家里的一切都由我一个人挑了起来。早晨5点钟起来准备好妈妈和自己的早饭,同时还要把妈妈的中饭做出来放在电锅里,因为中午不能回家吃饭。下午放学回家第一件事情就是收拾家,然后开始做饭,伺候妈妈,去地里干活。等一切忙完了,也就9点多了,一天天这样下来,我已经什么精神都没有了,没有时间更没有精力去温习我喜爱的英语了,英语成绩就这样慢慢下降了……”

3.家庭英语教育的缺失

家庭教育是每个人一生中不可缺失的启蒙教育,健全而有效的家庭教育对一个人的健康成长有着至关重要的作用,自然也会促进英语学习。但“留守儿童”基本缺失了完整而有效的家庭教育,这样,其家庭英语教育无疑也会缺失。另外,许多家长思想上存在“早打工早赚钱”的误区,认为“不上学可省很多钱、不上学可以挣很多钱”,很多家长甚至有“英语不能当饭吃”、“不出国干嘛学英语”等消极想法,这些观念无形中影响了孩子英语学习的积极性。

4.学校教育及政府相关政策的影响

一方面,乡镇英语教育师资薄弱,英语教师缺乏。像湖南永州市的道县、宁远、蓝山等县目前都缺英语教师,因此,只能实行大众教育,很难给“留守儿童”在学习上更悉心的照顾和关怀。这在一个侧面造成“留守儿童”学校表现不积极、性格孤僻的局面。无形中这个更需要特殊关怀的群体便逐渐成为学校和老师放逐的对象。另一方面,我国城乡二元结构的长期存在和国家政策上的倾斜,导致城市和乡村的发展极度不平衡,[4]城、乡英语教育也是如此。国家在英语教育投资上明显倾向城市,乡镇学校在英语师资水平、软硬件设施上都难以与城市学校相比。近年来受“教育产业化”思潮的影响,乡镇优秀英语师资大量向城市流动,学校英语教学质量下降。这些都在不同程度上对“留守儿童”的英语学习造成消极的影响。

5.“留守儿童”心理状况对其英语学习的影响

除问卷调查外,笔者与10名英语成绩不是很好的“留守儿童”进行了详细的谈话。当问到是否想让父母回家时,有8名说想,2名表示无所谓。另外,调查中我们还发现,“留守儿童”中有相当一部分经常处在“流动――留守――流动”的状态。这种生活的动荡和学习环境的不稳定状态使他们对学习产生一种抵触情绪,学习心理也随之波动。“留守儿童”大多有着共同的特点:不善于与人沟通,不自信,没有良好的英语学习习惯,对英语表现出没有兴趣且漠不关心等。由于远离父母,缺少了起码的与父母交流的机会,而监护人又无力承担他们的学习或无暇顾及他们的情感变化,这样对他们的心理健康极为不利,常引发种种心理病症,如感情脆弱、自暴自弃、焦虑自闭、缺乏自信、悲观消极等。感情脆弱导致“留守儿童”害怕挫折,不敢尝试,而于需要大胆操练的英语学习而言,效果自然不好。另外,自暴自弃、焦虑自闭也是英语学习的一大克星,“留守儿童”在英语学习上没有自信,不敢与其他同学打交道或交流英语口语或学习经验,成绩越来越差,消极悲观心理也就油然而生,最后陷入恶性循环之中……

三、解决农村“留守儿童”英语学习障碍的可行性办法

“留守儿童”的英语教育问题已经成为一个令学校、老师、家长极为头痛的大难题,也在一定程度上成为一个严重的社会问题,迫切需要解决。解决“留守儿童”的英语教育问题,应该从以下四个方面入手。

首先,国家体制因素是影响“留守儿童”英语学习的主要因素之一。一段时间以来,城市对流动人口子女入学存在“歧视”,明确规定适龄小孩要在户籍所在地就学,或者由城市学校收取借读费,这就使得“留守儿童”与城市“隔绝”。笔者认为政府应高度关心农民流动的问题,对流动儿童和城市儿童要一视同仁,取消借读费,使“留守儿童”变成流动儿童;同时加强对乡镇一级学校的扶持力度,更新和改善其教学设备,提供必要的硬件和软件设施。因为,网络和多媒体对英语语言教学起到积极的推动作用,它不仅可以增强学生学习英语的兴趣,还能提高学生在听说读写译等各个方面的能力。[5]

其次,当地政府的相关措施在很大程度上影响着“留守儿童”英语学习。在现阶段,可以借鉴上海的方式,改“户籍制”为“居住地制度”。实施流动儿童的教育“以流入地政府管理为主、以全日制公办学校为主”的政策。[6]各地政府特别是教育部门应该进一步加大对接收“留守儿童”的督导,从根本上杜绝城市学校对流动儿童采用歧视性政策的现象,确保流动儿童教育政策的实施。同时加强对农民工子女学校的扶持力度,为其办学提供基本的场地、适当的拨款,以及现代英语教学必要的硬件、软件设施等。

再次,学校的相关措施在提高“留守儿童”英语学习效果方面起到至关重要的作用。学校英语课堂是一个由学校创建、英语教师和学生共同参与的能激发和诱导学生自觉学习并运用英语的自然环境。这主要体现在英语语言硬件和软件环境两个方面。各级各类学校、英语教师及整个社会都应积极努力为“留守儿童”的英语教育创造习得环境,提供习得条件。同时要引导“留守儿童”冲破心理障碍,多在英语学习过程中表现自己。就英语教学环境,应大力更新英语教学手段,尽可能多地使用多媒体教学,提高“留守儿童”的英语学习效果。

另外,我们还可以采用“家长办法”。对于“留守儿童”的英语学习,外出打工的父母要选择有威信的亲属作为监护人,[7]在思想上和行动上重视子女的英语教育,尽可能多地关注子女的学习、生活和心理状况,为其提供更为优良的家庭教育。并经常与孩子的班主任、监护人联系,共同商讨教育的策略与办法,使孩子能在良好的心理环境和社会环境中健康成长。

四、结语

“留守儿童”是一个社会性的问题,它是我们目前存在的一种现状。就“留守儿童”的英语学习而言,营造一个关爱“留守儿童”的英语社会环境,对于家庭、学校和政府来说,是义不容辞的责任。只有社会各界共同关注,多方位、多角度地采取相应措施,建立起一套行之有效的机制,才能使“留守儿童”受到正常、健全、完善的英语教育,形成良好的学习心理,真正提高他们的英语学习效果。

1.儿童学习英语的途径

很多地方的儿童英语教育基本上同成人英语教育的发展趋于同步,到了本世纪,英语教育出现了前所未有的繁荣局面。小学从三年级开始开设英语课程,各类的英语培训点,如:幼儿英语班、儿童英语兴趣班、少儿英语培训班、儿童英语培训基地或学校、英语家教等,真是琳琅满目,比比皆是。儿童选择学习英语的场所很多,这无疑极大地促进了儿童英语教育的发展。

2.教师资格

在小学,每个学校都有两名以上的英语教师,任课教师多半接受过正规英语专业教育或正在接受培训,但也有极少一部分是其它学科老师兼任,目前还没有一所小学聘请外籍教师。社会力量办学的教师有专职教师担任的,有聘请大、中专院校英语教师担任的,有聘请初、高中的英语教师担任的,甚至还有用英语专业学生担任的。有些培训点则聘有外籍教师,但为数不多。

3.课程安排

在小学,从三年级到六年级整学年都开设英语课程,每周两课时,每课时45分钟,采用大班教学,学生人数一般都在50人左右。社会力量办学因校而异,有每周两课时的,也有四课时的,班级人数相对较少。

4.教材采用

据不完全统计,目前全国小学英语教材已有一百多种,有中国人编的,有外国人编的,也有中国人和外国人合编的。小学统一采用全日制新课标的教材“英语”。其它培训点所采用的教材种类比较多,有“沛沛英语”、“黄波英语”、“突破英语”、“快乐英语”、“小星星英语”、“剑桥少儿英语”、“阶梯英语”、“疯狂英语”、“新概念英语”等,有些采用自编教材。至于采用什么教材,因校而异,但最流行的莫过于“剑桥少儿英语”。

5.评估手段

由于现在都实行九年义务教育,小学生毕业时都可以按地段升入初中,所以对学生英语水平的评估没有统一的标准。因而,评估手段也因学校、老师不同而各异。主要采用两种手段:笔试(默写单词、翻译句子)和面试(读书、对话、回答问题)。其它评估方式还有真实活动、学生表演或展示和学生自测等。

二、几点思考

1.校方重视不够

有些校方认为,英语课程不如其它学科(如语文、数学)重要,课时安排不足。根据新的课程标准,小学英语应每周开设四课时,但实际上只开两课时,有时就连两课时也不能保证。在我国单一的语言环境里,绝大多数儿童一旦离开英语课堂便与英语完全失去联系。所以,课时安排存在严重不足,这显然无法为学生提供英语习得所需的足够的语言输入。还有,有些人认为,小学英语老师很容易当,英语也很容易教,会读几句英语就可以教了,所以会出现其它学科老师兼任英语老师的现象。对英语教育重视不够也表现在资金投入不足:教学环境不理想,教学空间过于拥挤,班级大,人数多,缺少必要的教学设备。即使有些小学有多媒体教室(数量不多),也不是用来上英语课的。如果用多媒体教室来上课,多半是公开课或者是示范课。所有这些都严重影响了儿童英语学习的兴趣以及英语交际能力的培养,严重束缚了儿童创造能力的发挥。

2.家长急于求成

各类英语兴趣班如此红火,除了有些家长对小学英语教育信心不足以外,跟有些家长“急于求成”不无关系。有些家长认为,孩子不能输在起跑线上,希望自己的孩子能“出人头地”,讲一口流利、纯正的英语。所以,许多孩子(包括学龄前儿童)除了在学校繁重的学习外,还要参加各类英语兴趣班,家长还在家里准备了各种外语书籍、磁带、光盘和复读机等外语工具,不惜一切代价向他们灌输外语方面的知识,要求孩子去背那些他们根本无法理解的单词、短语和句子,使他们整天陷入记、读、背、说的重压下,这不仅无助于他们的智力发展,反而扼杀了他们学习英语的兴趣,严重制约了儿童智力的发展。

3.教师教学目标不明确

目前我国还没有颁布统一的小学英语教学大纲,因而,我们就无法按照教学目的和要求去培训老师、编写教材和组织教学。老师上课无纲可循,教学目的不明确。教师只知道小学开设英语是形势所趋,却不知道小学生应该打下什么基础,获得那些方面的知识和能力。所以,有些老师只是按照自己的主观愿望进行教学。

4.教学方法、手段单一

(1)过分强调课堂形式“轰轰烈烈”调动学生学习英语的积极性,激发学生学习英语的兴趣,是儿童英语教育很重要的一个目的,所以有些老师陷入了这样的一个误区:教儿童学英语,就是培养他们学习英语的兴趣。因而,在课堂教学中,过分强调课堂形式“轰轰烈烈”,只注重教学形式,仅在直观兴趣和表演上下工夫,课堂上看上去生动活泼,轰轰烈烈,但儿童没有真正学到英语。我们必须清楚地认识到,兴趣固然重要,但仅仅培养兴趣是不够的,我们的最终目的是教会他们说英语,读英语,写英语,直到能用英语进行交际。

(2)将英语条文化少年儿童的模仿能力很强,但有意的记忆不如成人。许多教师对儿童的心理特点的理解过于肤浅,用教成人的方法来教儿童,把外语当成纯粹的知识来讲授。比如在教oneapple,twoapples的时候,就把名词变复数的几大规则抄于黑板,供学生们背诵。教学活动开展得少,过于强调对词汇和句型的背诵,使活生生的语言变成了固定的规则,英语课成了死记硬背的代名词,教学过程枯燥无味。

(3)忽视儿童个性儿童的心理特点表明:儿童生性好动活泼,爱表现,好奇心强,注意力集中短。如果老师忽视这些特点,就会削弱他们学习英语的自信心和好奇心。许多老师希望儿童乖、听话,要求他们在课堂45分钟内自始至终都要坐得端端正正,“遵守纪律”,稍有些动作就当众批评。教师鼓励少、表扬少,不少教师上课缺乏表情和激情,对学生出色的表现无动于衷,很少鼓励较差的学生试一试。提问不够全面,领读、带读、对话和表演相对集中在一些较积极、基础较好的学生,致使有的学生成了课堂中的陪衬,造成了两极分化的现象。

5.课程衔接脱轨

课程衔接也是一个严重的问题。小学开设英语就是要为学生升入中学继续学习英语奠定初步的基础,很好地为初中英语服务。然而,由于种种原因,学过三、四年英语的学生在进入初中以后,在英语方面并没有显示出多大的优势,水平参差不齐,造成初中英语重复教学,既浪费时间,又浪费资源。

三、几点建议

1.加强政府对英语教育的领导和重视

政府有关部门要对英语给予足够的重视,加大资金投入,引进教学设备,把现代教育技术引入英语课堂;改善教学环境,吸纳贤才;组织专家对儿童英语进行理论研究,制定适合我市的小学英语教学大纲;加强管理;努力改变目前的教学现状,加快英语教育发展的步伐。

2.全面提高英语教师素质

有一支高素质的教师队伍,是儿童学好英语、提高教学质量的保障。我们要加大培养英语教师的力度,使英语教师不仅在语言上过关,而且有较高的理论修养,深谙儿童学习语言的规律和特点。我们可以通过以下途径和方法来提高英语教师的素质:第一,加强老师的岗位培训和分批对英语教师进行业务培训,组织教师外出学习,观摩优质课,参加各类外语教师培训班,以开阔视野,启发思路,鼓励教师创新。第二,组织教师学习教育理论,听专家讲座,以先进的教育理论指导教师的教学实践;学习和借鉴国内外外语教学的研究成果和经验,并结合自己的教学实践进行研究。第三,组织教师学习儿童心理学,了解儿童的心理特点,以便更好地掌握儿童的喜好,促进建立融洽、和谐的师生关系。

一、几种主要的儿童英语阅读理解策略教学模式

(一)交互式教学模式

交互式教学是指以师生间的交互对话为背景,在真实的阅读任务中培养儿童灵活运用阅读理解策略,并有效提高儿童阅读理解能力的一种教学模式,是由佩林卡萨()于1982年提出的。交互式教学充分吸收了专家支架、预期教学和维果茨基的“最近发展区”思想,现已成为最具影响力的英语阅读理解策略教学模式之一。

交互建构策略教学模式聚焦于对理解策略的学习过程,具有如下特点:实施周期较长,它要融入到整个学年甚至数年的课堂教学中进行;强调阅读者与文本之间的交互建构作用,并认为教师和儿童对文章的反应会影响到他们各自对文章的理解;关注理解策略的学习过程,以此协调儿童之间的“对话”和对文章意思的建构理解;要求教师具体示范怎样在不同的语境下灵活组合应用“预测下文内容”“心理意象”“与先前知识建立联系”“自我提问”“阐释疑难”和“总结”等多种阅读理解策略。

交互建构策略教学模式一般包括如下几个重要的教学环节。

第一,教师的解释与示范。在教学开始,教师首先解释并示范上述几种阅读理解策略的灵活运用,包括对各种阅读理解策略的不同应用语境的说明。

第二,儿童的练习。儿童练习使用阅读理解策略,教师对怎样有效使用阅读理解策略给予指导,并在儿童需要时给予必要的暗示。

二、对三种教学模式的比较分析

以上三种阅读理解策略教学模式都受到建构主义理论的影响,在许多方面表现出比较强的一致性,如:它们都吸纳了支架式教学思想,认为要在儿童需要时给予恰当提示与指导;都强调教师的有效示范作用,主张在教学过程中直接示范与解释儿童学习的阅读理解策略;都重视儿童对阅读理解策略的练习。但在一些方面它们又有不同。

第一,教学内容有区别。交互式教学模式的重点是对“总结”“提问”“阐释”以及“预测”等四种理解策略的教授,要求实现儿童对这几种策略的掌握和迁移应用;直接解释教学模式则适用于各种不同的阅读理解策略的教学,但它在同一时间内只关注单个策略的学习和运用;交互建构策略教学则主要以“预测下文内容”“心理意象”“与先前知识建立联系”“自我提问”“阐释疑难”和“总结”等策略的综合及灵活应用作为教学内容。

三、给教师的教学建议

以上三种阅读理解策略教学模式是研究者针对以英语为母语的儿童而研究发展起来的,相关英语阅读教学的实验研究表明,交互式教学在小学特别是四年级以上儿童的英语教学中有显著效果,对英语为第二语言的儿童英语阅读理解能力的提高也有积极影响;直接解释教学也能帮助小学儿童掌握阅读理解策略,促进他们阅读理解水平的提高;交互建构策略教学可以使二年级的儿童更多地意识到英语阅读理解策略的使用。这种教学模式对我国儿童英语阅读教学具有重要的借鉴和参考价值。

我国第二语言习得研究从20世纪70年代后期和80年代初期才逐渐引起人们的注意,并且研究多以学习、介绍和借鉴西方学者的理论为主。中国学者引进国外的理论并在某些方面进行实践探讨。

在中国,对于儿童进行第二语言学习,语言教育专家们的态度与看法是见仁见智。由于中国的改革开放以及国际交流的普遍性,英语作为一门国际通用语,显示出其前所未有的重要性。各行各业从业人员争相学习英语,各级各类学校,从大学到小学,甚至有些幼儿园,都把英语列入必修科目。家长对英语学习重要性的认识逐渐提高,生怕自己的孩子错过英语学习的黄金期,生怕自己的孩子输在起跑线上,纷纷把孩子送入英语培训班和培训学校。可以说,时代的发展导致了社会上儿童英语培训班和英语培训学校的出现和壮大。那么,到底英语学习是否存在所谓的关键期?儿童英语习得过程中,如何看待母语的正负迁移作用和效果?

一.儿童进行第二语言学习的理论依据

1.关键期学说

20世纪50年代,一位神经心理学家得出结论,语言的习得与大脑发展有关。60年代一位心理语言学家Lennerberg在其代表作《语言的生物学基础》(Biological Foundations of Language)一书中提出语言习得关键期假说。关键期理论是语言学中的重要理论之一,该理论认为学习第二语言的最佳阶段是5—12岁,一旦错过了这一关键期,生理条件发生变化,二语习得将变得事倍功半,语言学习会变得越来越困难,而且永远也难以达到本族语的熟练程度。一直以来,关键期理论在二语习得领域占据着主导地位。在这一理论的影响下,“年龄”被许多学者认为是决定能否取得英语学习成功的主要因素,全社会似乎已经达成共识,那就是——英语学习必须从娃娃抓起,越早越好。依据主要有二:一是儿童听觉更加灵敏,口腔肌肉更加灵活,大脑还有发育的余地;二是儿童心理障碍较小,不会因发音错误而觉得面子扫地。

2.皮亚杰认知发展理论的教育意义

皮亚杰认为学习是儿童进行发明与发现的过程,教育的真正目的并非增加儿童的知识,而是设置充满智慧刺激的环境,让儿童自行探索,主动学到知识,这意味著我们在教育中要注意发挥学生的主动性,不要把知识强行灌输给学生。

皮亚杰还认为认知发展是呈阶段性的(2—7的孩子属于前运算阶段,此时的儿童个体开始运用简单的语言符号从事思考,具有表象思维能力),出于不同的认知发展阶段的儿童其认识和解释事物的方式与成人是有别的。因此,要了解并根据儿童的认知方式设计教学,才能让儿童从学习中获得乐趣,也不会扼杀儿童学习的欲望和好奇心。

综上所述,我们可以得出以下结论:儿童早期有能力学习并接受第二语言学习,幼儿教育是可行的,但应符合儿童身心健康发展的特征。幼儿学习英语的优势在于语音语调。然而只有老师给儿童提供足够和准确的语言输入时,儿童的生理优势才有意义;只有老师了解并善于引导儿童时,儿童的心理优势才能得以发挥。

因此,有人认为Lennerberg的关键期理论是针对母语习得而言(靳洪刚,1997:94)

二.迁移理论的两重性

迁移是多种不同学习方式之间的相互作用、相互影响,它存在于各种内容、各种形式的学习当中同样也存在于语言学习过程中(姚梅林,吴建民,2000:1)。对学习起到积极和正面的促进叫“正迁移”,对学习起到阻碍作用叫“负迁移”。二语习得过程中,母语迁移是一种不可避免的现象,母语迁移可来自语音、词汇、语法和风俗习惯等诸多方面。其实,在从母语到目的语的习得过程中,正迁移的发生几率要远远大于负迁移。二语习得过程中,母语是一种不可忽视的资源。Cohen(1998:205)在谈到母语和二语思维时,把母语思维当作学习策略对待。

Ellis(1994:151)认为,所有的自然语言中,都存在一些共同的核心规则。也就是说,尽管人类语言千差万别,但仍有其共同的地方。汉语属汉藏语系,英语属印欧语系,汉语和英语在语法结构上差异很大。根据语言类型学,汉语属分析性语言,用语序、复合词及虚词等手段表达语言逻辑;英语属词形变化复杂的屈折语。但汉语和英语之间确实存在许多共同点,这些共同之处可以在语音、句法和语义等方面促成正迁移的实现。

1.母语正迁移现象的主要表现

(1)语音上

目前,无论汉语或者英语都使用国际音标。汉语音标也使用元音和辅音,只不过汉语被分为三个范畴——声母、韵母和调子。汉语中的声母就相当于英语中处于音节开头的辅音,韵母就相当于英语的元音。如:汉语中“大树”(da shu)、“美丽”(mei li),其中“d”、“sh” 、“m”、“l”都是开头的声母,相当于英语中对应的辅音 “d”、“∫”、“m”、“l”;“a”、“u”、“ei”、“i”就相当于英语中的元音。

(2)句法上

汉语和英语在基本结构上相同,如陈述句、否定句、特殊疑问句、感叹句、被动语态等,所以中国学生比较容易掌握这些句型。

仅就陈述句而言,汉语和英语之间有五种基本句型相同(黄传庆,1996:114):

①S+V+Predicate

(3)语义上

英语和汉语在语义上也存在着许多共性。

①同形异义词。英语单词“black”有许多表达意义,其中有四个和汉语的一样。

a. 黑色——颜色。如:a black clothes ( 黑色的衣服)

b. 黑暗——没有光。如:a black house (一间黑屋)

c. 秘密——sectet。如:black list (黑名单)

d. 坏(指心肠)、狠毒——immoral (不道德)。如:the black art ( 魔术;妖术)

②同音异义词

英语: The earth revolves on its axis. (地球)

It fell to earth. (地面)

汉语:木锨是一种农用的工具。

老杨真实一把好木锨。

③同形异音字

英语:I am practicing drawing the bow.

He has been bowed with age.

汉语:人参(shen)、参(can)加;长(chang)短,长(zhang)大

2.母语负迁移现象的主要表现

(1)语音方面

主要出现在口头语篇中。虽然很多中国人的英语很流利,但多少都会带一点Chinese accent,不像本族使用者那样纯正地道。这是因为受到了母语发音方式和规则的负面影响而导致的。从语言系统看,英语是一种主要依靠语调来区别字义的“语调语言”(intonation language),而汉语则属于以声调区别字义的“声调语言”(tone language)。

例如:A: Would you like to go to the cinema with me tonight?

B: Sorry? ( )/ Sorry

如果用声调说“Sorry”表达的意思是“I didn’t hear you . Could you say that again, please?”但如果用降调说“Sorry”,显然意思是委婉拒绝。而汉语就主要用声调来区分字义,如“妈(ma)和马(ma),虽然字音拼写是一样的,但声调的不同直接导致汉字字面意思的差异。

(2)词汇方面

在二语习得过程中,词汇负迁移最常见。我们经常会在学生低年级阶段的作文里发现类似下面这些词语的表达:money bag (钱包),big student(大学生), watering chicken(落汤鸡)。不难看出在词语的表达上,学生在选词时受到了汉语词汇表达的影响。

再比如,龙在汉语中含有褒义色彩,是威武、刚毅以及帝王的象征,如龙袍,还有中国人常说自己是龙的传人。父母期望自己的孩子将来大有作为,称为望子成龙等。而在西方人眼中,dragon是神话中浑身乌黑、长着翅膀、张牙舞爪的怪物,常常给人带来灾难和不幸。因此,在交流中不要想当然地以母语文化去理解英语词汇,以避免产生误解,导致交流不畅。

(3)语法、句法方面

英语重形合而汉语重意合,其表现是:英语主要以词汇为纽带,汉语则主要以逻辑为纽带;英语造句主要借着连词、关系代词等形式骨架,汉语造句则主要凭借隐含的逻辑将句子的各个部分统一起来。由于汉语没有严格意义上的形态变化,语法不像英语那样要求在人称和数的变化、名词单复数,因而对中国学生来说汉语语法负迁移在学习英语时很容易出现。因此中国学生很容易出现从汉语语法规则推导英语语法表达,从而产生了语法上的负迁移现象。比如下面一些因为汉语语法、句法负迁移而产生的不正确表达:

(4) 文化习俗方面

文化负迁移主要表现在社交场合,它指的是学习者在实施言语行为时,因为对目的语文化缺乏了解而按母语的文化习惯进行交际,从而产生了不符合目标语文化习惯的言语行为。下面是一些例子。中国人很含蓄,当被人赞扬时,总是客气地说“哪里,哪里”,若按字面译成“where, where”可就要闹笑话了。外国人面对赞扬,通常是说“Thank you”表示接受。中国人在交谈中会谈及对方的年龄、职业、收入、婚姻家庭状况及物品衣服的价钱,但如果对西方人问“How old are you? ”、 “How much do you earn every month?”、 “How much is your dress?”对方肯定会生气地回答“It is none of your business.”因为他们认为这是在干涉隐私,非常粗鲁的行为。

三.二语习得对外语教与学的启示

1. 合理利用母语的正迁移

可以充分利用英汉语之间的共同性,积极发挥汉语对英语学习的促进作用。这样不但可以增加学生学习的兴趣和信心,也可以大大提高英语学习的效率,达到事半功倍的效果。因为中国学生都是在母语先入为主,并且根深蒂固的前提下进行外语学习的。这种情况下,对于母语,应端正态度,不是要努力摆脱它,而是要思考如何更好利用它为外语学习提供方便。

2. 努力克服母语的负迁移

对于母语的负迁移,在教学中就必须着重强调以引起学生的重视。告诉学生在学习英语时犯错很正常,有错才说明二语学习已经进入了新的阶段。另外,要认识母语负迁移的作用,在学习中培养自己的英语思维,从而减轻母语思维的影响。

教师应选择真实的语言材料,在课堂上最大限度地给学生提供充分的目的语语言模式,让学习者更多的接触目的语环境。同时,应该把文化教学纳入外语教学的一部分,提高学生对文化差异的敏感性,提高他们的跨文化交际能力。教师应该注重课堂上的语言输入,输入的越多则越能帮助学生修正和完善自己的语言表达习惯。

3. 二语习得中的年龄因素

从理论上讲,二语习得是一个非常复杂的过程,其中既有内在的先天因素,也有外在的环境因素。关于“外语学习是否应该越早越好”这一问题,目前国外的二语习得研究领域普遍认同一下几种观点:1)如果说低龄儿童在学习外语方面较青少年和成年人更具优势,那么这种优势仅仅局限在语音方面。2)虽然儿童有可能习得地道的发音,但其前提是要大量接触第二语言,如果儿童倾向于保持自己的母语水平,则较有可能无法习得地道的发音。3)成年人在二语习得的初始速度上要快一些,但儿童通常在最终成效上要优于成年人。4)儿童在自然环境及语境嵌入式交际中表现出更强的优势,而青少年和成年人则在正规的教育环境或语境缺乏式交际中表现出优势。5)儿童习得地道的语法能力的年龄(大约15岁左右)晚于习得地道发音的年龄(大约6岁左右);成年人也有可能在口语和写作中达到较高的语法水平。6)高质量地浸入式外语学习比在低龄阶段开始学习外语更加重要,这是外语学习能否成功的关键。总之,低龄儿童确实在语言习得方面有一定的优势。但年龄自身并不独立构成优势,这个优势只有在与其他因素共同作用时才能发挥出来,如教师的质量、教学的条件和方法、学时的投入、学习者的主观因素及其学习能力等。

4. 我国儿童学习外语所受到的制约

第一,从社会环境来看,英语在我国仅是一门外语,它既非官方语言,也非大众日常使用的语言。英语学习者除课堂之外,接触或使用英语的机会极其有限。幼儿在习得母语的过程中需要大量的模仿、练习、(对错误语言的)纠正、(对正确语言的)强化以及儿童与成人或儿童与儿童之间的沟通和交流。但我国儿童在学习外语的过程中缺乏这样的自然环境。第二,从教学环境来看,虽然浸入式教学是儿童英语教师追求的目标,但受到师资水平的制约,我国目前大部分幼儿园都不具备实行浸入式教学的条件。不得当的教学方式就无法为儿童提供“习得”外语的环境。第三,从语言学的角度来看,儿童语言发展必须依靠一个可以实际学习和使用语言的环境,通过与他人交流互动,学习适当的语音、语义、语用和语法。如果仅让儿童鹦鹉学舌般地掌握部分语句或歌谣,而无对话、交流的语境,这种教育是不值得提倡的。第四,幼儿的学习能力受到其自身生理、智力、认知等条件的限制,要想取得一定的学习效果,必须付出更多的时间和努力。而儿童教育的重心是维护儿童的身心健康,培养儿童良好的习惯。因此,在幼儿阶段开展英语教学往往会事倍功半,在小学阶段开始学习英语也许更具科学性。
